Margot is an acknowledged expert in her field and her passion to make such important understandings and ways of working with troubled children accessible to ordinary people - parents, teachers, support workers - is manifest in the old excellent editions. The relief of having found an image that accurately conveys your familiar mental states, can be profound. This revised and updated second edition also contains a new section on how to use the superbly emotive The Emotion Cards (9781138070981) to facilitate deeper therapeutic conversations.

Each page has a suggestion of how to use it which can be useful or you can adapt it to the situation you work in. Offers opportunities to rehearse other ways of functioning by trying out alternatives safely on paper in exercises which can be adapted for any age range and ability.

There are only one or two pages I find even remotely appropriate for working with school aged children (or anyone, for that matter). However it became clear from the introduction that this book uses emotions cards which are mentioned in the descripton but nowhere to be seen. A tool that I’d recommend to every practitioner to use in counselling and psychotherapy independent of their preferred modality. They can help promote a new clarity of thought as a first step towards positive action and bring seemingly huge, unmanageable and insoluble problems into a new perspective.

Dr Margot Sunderland is Director of Education and Training at The Centre for Child Mental Health London, Senior Associate of the Royal College of Medicine and Child Psychotherapist with over thirty years’ experience of working with children and families.

This manual contains a series of structured, easy to do picture exercises to help people of all ages express, communicate and deal more effectively with their emotions in everyday life. This is an essential resource for therapists, educators, counsellors and anyone who engages other people in conversations that matter about their relationship to self, others and life in general. The cards will not go out of date as I imagine they will illustrate life’s difficulties that are timeless.

This beautiful resource is also the perfect supplement to the second edition of Dr Margot Sunderland’s book Draw on Your Emotions. Providing a series of photocopiable illustrations, the book is a source of effective readymade material.There are worksheets for many different feelings and emotions with useful guidelines on issues to raise with each each sheet which can be photocopied and used to build up a folder for the child/young person. I have used this book and the printable work sheets in many settings as part of my counselling practice and I have found them to be very useful with individuals of all ages as it always the individual to problem solve their issue and escape their 'fog'. Dr Sunderland is the author of over 20 books in child mental health, which collectively have been translated into 18 languages and published in 24 countries. I work with students aged 5-13 in a school setting and I had hoped this resource would be somewhat lighthearted with a bit of an art therapy focus. The new suggestions will take the work with children from labelling feelings without a real connection to deeper meaning to an integration of feelings, imagination and language that deepen awareness and supports emotional development.
