About this deal

The ESS 9010 DAC chip in Black and the higher-performance 9016 chip in Red employ minimum-phase filtering for naturally detailed sound. Finally I can do nothing but HIGHLY recommend this DAC to anybody who is starting out listening to music in an audiophile way. volts—enough power to successfully drive all preamplifier input circuits and a wide range of today’s efficient headphones. Some mention that it is top quality, an excellent quality compact DAC / Headphone Amp, and totally reliable, while others say that it's quite expensive and has some build quality issues. It’s between this, or the Clear (and/or Elex) for the best full-size headphone pairing I tried with the baby Dragonfly.

Audioquest introduces the Dragonfly Black 24/96kHz USB DAC + Preamp + Headphone Amplifier which can now be used with Apple and Android phones due to the increased voltage output. Compared to a computer/smartphone/tablet's headphone output you'll notice a more dynamic sound with more detail and openness. The lowest notes on a double-bass have suitable density and mass while the shriek of a tightly fingered violin, being played aggressively remains suitably biting and shrill.

While DragonFly Black uses a high-quality headphone amp and analog volume control, DragonFly Red includes a more advanced ESS headphone amp and a bit-perfect digital volume control that resides on the 9016 DAC chip itself—a sophisticated implementation that gives Red a unique combination of power and grip over the music. while audibly behind its brother in terms of subtlety, still offer greatly improved sound quality and thus should be the ideal first step into the “real audio” world. DragonFly Black, Red, and Cobalt will work with most Android devices running on Lollipop OS (and some Android devices running on KitKat), provided that the device manufacturer has adhered to the USB specification and implementation, and supports audio over USB. Joss` voice was so intimate, you could hear and feel every breath and this certain "airyness" in her voice was translated so well by the dragonfly that i almost cried and laughed at the same time! The HD660S are marginally easier to drive, with only a slight increase in sensitivity - but having half the impedance of the HD6XX/HD650 means the Dragonfly Black can push further before running out of voltage; this is immediately apparent when they’re compared back-to-back.

While the DAC chips we’ve selected are remarkably powerful and sophisticated, we’ve intentionally limited DragonFly Black and DragonFly Red’s processing capabilities to 24-bit/96kHz resolution. The Play handles complex passges on the HD6xx with ease, which is something the Dragonly, with all of its efforts, cannot. Everyone’s listening preferences are unique, so we offer a relaxed and pressure free environment, with our three demonstration studios, extensive headphone area and large showroom facilities to aid you in your journey. AudioQuest’s new DragonFly Black is a USB digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) designed to deliver cleaner, clearer, more naturally beautiful sound from any computer, smartphone, or tablet. The DragonFly Black now delivers that same clear, dynamic sound with Apple or Android mobile devices. Though we like how the Dragonfly Black worked with our MacBook, we think it’s even more interesting as a portable DAC/amp for the iPhone.
