Overall, this was a fun and captivating new read by the incomparable Nora Roberts and one that should go over a treat with all romantic suspense fans. Brooks places the epicenter of the Bigfoot war in a high-tech hideaway populated by the kind of people you might find in a Jurassic Park franchise: the schmo who doesn’t know how to do much of anything but tries anyway, the well-intentioned bleeding heart, the know-it-all intellectual who turns out to know the wrong things, the immigrant with a tough backstory and an instinct for survival. She works a day job as an office manager and a night shift as a bartender with dreams of one day owning her own bar. Her nuanced performance perfectly captures the essence of the characters, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the story. It was uplifting to see Morgan not only regain her sense of self but become stronger because of the journey.Much of this book is written in short, choppy sentences, building that heightened hype and excitement. Her new job as the manager of a resort bar gave her purpose, new direction and unexpected romance with the owner’s grandson, Miles Jameson. Morgan moves to Vermont and starts her life over, but just when she thinks the nightmare is behind her, the killer surfaces again with taunts and threats to come for Morgan. Readers are quickly pulled into the story line with fluid writing and great characterization that grabbed and held my attention and kept me engaged. Morgan Albright has been uprooted her entire life as an Army brat, but now outside of Baltimore, she works two jobs and has a roommate to own her own home.

My only critique was a little bit of padding or slowness in the middle, but I think if you don't binge this book you won't feel it as much. I always feel like when I'm reading her books I either fall completely in love with the characters or want to be BFFs with them. A gripping thriller that I read with tension looking for clues in the cleverly laid out twists till I could finally find peace when I finished reading my first novel by Nora Roberts.

Roberts shows Gavin’s slow descent into obsession and madness as the inverse of Morgan’s healing journey back to herself and her community. An identity theft was portrayed exceptionally well as too the devastating aftermath, however the story then seemed to deteriorate, with the ending happening to quickly after all the suspense. Meanwhile readers are treated to Morgan’s reconnection with her family and the rebuilding of her life. She is a superb storyteller that intermingled the ever-present threat that was looming over Morgan and the rebuilding of her life. When Morgan meets a new man named Luke, she feels intrigued by him, but is not ready to move things much faster than a few dates/hang outs.

Morgan Albright, portrayed by January LaVoy, has finally made a life for herself in Baltimore with her roommate, Nina. Morgan’s life is happy and fulfilling, and she is making progress on her financial and career goals. This had the family dynamics, the community vibes, and the competency porn that I love, plus the resort atmosphere reminded me of the Bridal Quartet in a wonderful way. The back door glass is broken, cash and jewelry are missing, her car is gone, and Nina lies dead on the floor.The characters are very well developed and it was easy to get caught up in all of the drama that unfolded.

Morgan learns from the FBI that the man she knew as Luke, was not, but is a serial con artist, thief, and murderer.Former Army brat Morgan Albright has finally planted roots in a friendly neighborhood near Baltimore. Roberts switches between Morgan’s point of view and those of the killer and his FBI pursuers to successful enough effect, but there’s a whole lot of narrative bloat in the form of inconsequential dialogue and plot repetition. The well-rounded characters, particularly Nina and Morgan, will stay with you long after the final chapter. Her friend and roommate Nina helps her make the mortgage payments, as does Morgan's job as a bartender. You’d think in this day and age we’d have the technological expertise to quickly capture a serial killer and identity thief like Gavin but he was exceptionally skilled and cagey.
